#28: Is it too late for a career pivot?

Listen To The Episode.

Is it too late to change careers?

The gap between the life you want and the life you are living is called:

  • Mindset
  • Consistency
  • Focus

Earlier this week i was in a group coaching session.

I was asked is it possible to pivot in your career if you are on the latter end of your career and no know experience or education in what you want you are interested in doing.

This is a question that has popped up often either directly or as an underlying question.

The answer is yes and maybe.

Obviously if you are an accountant and want to be a heart surgeon the chances of a full pivot are slim.

But if you are an accountant and want to be a teacher the chances are much greater.

The key to career pivots is built in 3 stages.

First identify what you want to pivot into

For example, the accountant who is tired of the stress of month end close and financial statements knows she wants to teach young people about financial responsibility, how to create budgets and build a savings.

Second look for a bridge from who you want to be to who you are now.

For the accountant, she has the knowledge but she needs experience in teaching and working with kids.  A great suggestion would be to volunteer with the local Junior Achievement organization.

The volunteer work gives her the experience and gives her the opportunity to figure out if that is something she wants to pursue in the long run.

Third once the experience is making traction and the accountant wants to do more, then she can look her options to make the transition either to full time work or continue in a part-time capacity.

Drastic Career pivots are not as successful because the trust and know factor has not been established.

Now, back to the original question…  Can you change careers later in life?

Yes, yes you can.
