MY STORY
I didn’t learn leadership from a title.
I learned it by living it.
My career has never followed a straight line. I’ve built businesses, taught in classrooms, led teams and nonprofit initiatives, created brands, photographed hundreds and hundreds of people, hosted conversations, and started over more than once.
And somewhere along the way, I realized the experiences that shaped me most weren’t the titles I held. They were the moments when I had to figure out what came next, trust what I already knew, and lead before anyone officially called me a leader.
MY CAREER HAS NEVER BEEN A STRAIGHT LINE.
2010
After years in the corporate world, I decided it was time to do something different. I quit my job, packed up my puppy and took a six-week road trip across the West. When I came home, I turned my love of photography into a business and began a completely different chapter of my career.
2017
By 2017, life had changed considerably, both personally and professionally. I was running my photography business, began consulting with businesses on social media and marketing, and returned to the classroom to teach college part-time. It was a season that required me to rethink what I knew, how I could use it and what came next.
2020
After 16 years in Texas, I moved back home to Tennessee and started over again. I was teaching virtually, rebuilding my network and figuring out what business looked like in a new place during a very uncertain time. That chapter eventually led to more speaking, podcasting and the leadership work I do today.
Looking back, none of these chapters followed a perfectly mapped-out career plan. Each one asked something different of me, and each required me to take what I already knew and learn how to use it in a new way.
I see the same thing happen with leaders all the time. The skills that got you here matter, but growth often requires you to think differently about how you communicate, how you influence others and how you show up.
You don’t leave the leader you’ve been behind. You build on her to become the leader your next chapter requires.
BEYOND THE BIO
I’m a West Tennessee girl who has always been curious about people, places and the stories behind them. I grew up with a mother who loved photography and family road trips, which probably explains why I still love grabbing a camera, getting in the car and seeing where the road takes me.
Photography has been part of my life for more than 25 years, and even though it’s no longer my primary business, you’ll rarely find me traveling without a camera nearby. Give me an old building, a small Southern town, a historic site or a road I’ve never driven before and I’m probably going to want to stop.
I’m also a lifelong Memphis Tigers fan, a history lover, a podcast host and someone who genuinely enjoys a good conversation with an interesting person. I love learning what makes people tick, hearing how they got where they are and discovering the parts of their story you don’t find in the official bio.
When I’m not working, there’s a pretty good chance I’m watching basketball, planning my next road trip, wandering through someplace historic, taking photographs or spending entirely too much time researching something simply because I got curious about it.
Turns out, curiosity has taken me to some pretty interesting places.
