Yesterday I witnessed the next generation taking yet another step towards the future during the University of Memphis Class of 2023 senior luncheon. Graduation can be both exciting and overwhelming in the face of what to do in the next step of independence and a vital part of our community.
A lesson I wished I had learned early on in college was the benefit of networking not only within my age group but likewise in the world outside college. In today’s environment with the technology to connect with literally anyone anywhere graduating seniors and college students in general are in a unique position to move their careers like never before.
If you’re a college student looking for ways to improve your career prospects, LinkedIn is an excellent platform to consider. As one of the most underrated social platforms and one with the best chance of being noticed by someone in a position to hire you, Linkedin is a MUST for any college student, but especially the graduating senior.
Here are three reasons why creating a LinkedIn profile can benefit you:
- Network Expansion: LinkedIn provides ample opportunities to connect with professionals in your desired industry. By creating a profile, you can establish relationships with individuals who can offer insights into your preferred career path or even provide job opportunities after graduation. Many companies also use LinkedIn to recruit employees, so having a strong profile can help you stand out to potential employers.
- Showcasing Skills and Experience: LinkedIn allows you to create a detailed profile that highlights your education, work experience, and any relevant skills you have developed. This gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your strengths and achievements to potential employers and peers in your industry. Additionally, you can use LinkedIn to publish articles, share projects you have worked on, and connect with others who share your interests.
- Career Development: LinkedIn can help you stay current with the latest industry news and trends, which is essential for career growth. You can follow companies, influencers, and thought leaders in your field to stay informed about new developments and opportunities. You can also use LinkedIn to search for internships or job opportunities and connect with alumni from your college who may be able to offer guidance or mentorship.
Creating a LinkedIn profile can help you expand your professional network, showcase your skills and experience, and stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments. It’s a valuable tool for career development that shouldn’t be overlooked.
Linkedin has the ability if used with a strategy of growth to set you up for a career bright with an endless array of possibilities.
